'There's nothing to gain in pulling Okonjo-Iweala down' - Peter Obi
The former Governor of Anambra
State met with some journalists in the state recently where he spoke on
various burning national issues. Of note was the alleged mismanagement
of Nigeria's economy by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala.
"It is rather unfortunate that we have this attitude of trying to pull down our best. Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala is a global star and only came back to serve her country and she did that with passion. We gain nothing trying to pull her down. We did it with Arunma Otteh, but we know what she is today. I have been in several meetings where this woman (Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala) was almost crying as she explained and pleaded with all and sundry on the need to save for the rainy day.
She advised that proceeds from excess crude sales should be saved in the Sovereign National Wealth Fund for effective management. I have read newspaper reports that it is ironic that she spoke of a rainy day when it was already pouring. I personally remain indebted to her because it was from her persistent preaching on the need to save in the Sovereign National Wealth Fund that made me incorporate savings in foreign currency – that is why one third of the money we left on leaving office was in foreign currency, $156 million(N25 billion at that time).
With interest now it would be about $170 million and with the current rate it is almost N40 billion. My position in all this is that we must cultivate the attitude of saving as a country. Excess crude money should be saved in the Sovereign Wealth Fund. No country will survive without saving for the future. Even in animal kingdom, the ants save for the rainy day. We must save bearing in mind that natural resources that we enjoy today are depleting assets."

PETA calls for American dentist who killed Zimbabwean lion to be extradited, charged and hanged.
Death threats have poured in after an American dentist killed a famous & protected lion in Zimbabwe named Cecil.
Tributes to the lion in one of the country's national parks have poured in at a location thousands of miles away, Dr Walter Palmer's office in Bloomington, Minnesota. Protesters dressed as 'dentist hunters' also threw stuffed lions at his house.
Tributes to the lion in one of the country's national parks have poured in at a location thousands of miles away, Dr Walter Palmer's office in Bloomington, Minnesota. Protesters dressed as 'dentist hunters' also threw stuffed lions at his house.
Palmer has said that he had trusted
his local guides to meet legal guidelines on his trip to Africa, during
which he shot Cecil the Lion with a crossbow before skinning and
beheading him around July 6.
The hunter's office and practice
website have become a target for animal rights activists disgusted at
the dentist's actions, which saw Zimbabwe authorities look for him in
connection with poaching on Tuesday.
One of the strongest denunciations
came from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which said on
its Twitter account that Palmer should hang for killing Cecil.
'If, as reported, this dentist &
guides lured #CeciltheLion out of the park with food so as to shoot him
on private property because shooting #CeciltheLion in the park would
have been illegal, he needs to be extradited, charged, &,
preferably, hanged.'
PETA continued, 'Hunting is a
coward's pastime. To get a thrill at the cost of life this man gunned
down a loved lion with a high-powered weapon'.
'All wild animals are beloved by
their own, but to hunters like this overblown, over-privileged little
man, they're merely targets.'
'The photograph of this dentist, smiling over the corpse of another animal, will disgust every caring soul in the world'.
The hunter allegedly paid $55,000
(£35,000) for a big game permit on the trip, and said that he did not
know that the 13-year-old lion was protected.

However, since his role in Cecil's
death has been uncovered, animal lovers have laid siege to Dr Palmer's
website, posting incredibly negative and abusive reviews.
A memorial to the famous lion at a
Zimbabwe national park who was shot by American dentist Walter Palmer
has been set up outside of his office in Bloomington, Minnesota, along
with a sign calling the hunter a killer
Some reviews on Yelp, which have been regularly deleted, have suggested violence towards Palmer and his business.
While outrage at Palmer's actions seethed through the Internet on Tuesday, those in the Twin Cities also disapproved.
Stuffed animals including lions were
placed outside of his office, along with a a sign that said 'You are a
coward and a killer!'
'I think they should reconsider
their dentist.' one woman said of people who go to Palmer to take care
of their teeth. 'There are plenty of other dentists in the community who
are animal advocates and good people.'
Ire against Palmer first erupted when he was identified as the shooter on Tuesday.
Emmanuel Fundira, the president of
the Safari Operators Association of Zimbabwe, confirmed at a news
conference on Tuesday that Palmer is wanted for the death of Cecil.

Godswill Akpabio Elected As Senate Minority Leader
Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Akwa Ibom state and Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) senator (Akwa Ibom northwest), has been named the
minority leader of the senate. Akpabio was nominated by the
south-south caucus of the PDP in the senate.
His nomination, however, is against the standing rules of the senate, which exempts first-term senators from holding principal positions. Last Wednesday, Gabriel Kolawole, justice of the federal high court, Abuja rejected an application seeking to stop Bukola Saraki, senate president, from the naming Akpabio as minority leader of the senate.
Alaye Pedro and Okechukwu Ibeh, both members of PDP, had filed an ex parte application challenging the party’s choice of Akpabio as senate minority leader. They contended that the possible emergence of Akpabio as senate minority leader would breach the senate standing orders exempting first-term senators from holding such a position.
But the court struck out their application, paving way for Akpabio’s nomination on Monday. The PDP, which lost the majority seat in the senate to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after the March general election, had zoned the position of senate minority leader to the south-south.
Challenging the nomination of Akpabio, Kabiru Marafa (APC Zamfara central), argued that it did not follow rules of the senate, and was therefore null and void. But Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, wondered why Marafa, who is a member of the APC, had made it his business to oppose the decision of the PDP – a party in which he has no stake.

Finally Buhari Perfoms 1st Miracle for the People of Nigeria.
After 40 days and 40 nights (it’s actually 39 days) on the saddle,
President Muhammadu Buhari has performed his first miracle: He has
conjured a mind-boggling N414 billion out of an otherwise ‘empty
treasury’.
‘Bailout’ is the catchword. And now, our errant governors can return to their old habits. There’s now plenty money to spend again. The party can start afresh. Yes, the bazaar is back!
A whooping N413.7 billion. Another N250 billion (in the least) coming from the Central Bank, in the form of soft loans. A restructuring of commercial loans amounting to about N660 billion, with the Federal Government set to serve as guarantor for fresh loans that the states may procure fromcommercial banks. The governors have definitely got back their groove. The spirit of the prodigal is set to return.
After nearly six weeks of prevaricating, PMB, who is not usually swayed by public opinion (which also explains why he’s taking his time and ignoring all of us clamouring for him to announce hisfirst cabinet), has finally capitulated to pressure. He has emptied our excess crude account (which Goodluck Jonathan was supposed to have cleaned out, by the way) and shaken out every dime inside the purse containing our LNG proceeds. And like the PDP before it, the APC is now set to “share the money”!

How A Teenger killed 4year old boy and removed his vital organs for a Ritualist .
Warning: Graphic photo:
A 16-year-old boy, Tajudeen Azeez, has been arrested by the Lagos state police command for allegedly killing a four-year-old boy in Ijaniki area of the state.Azeez reportedly removed the deceased’s intestine and kidney after killing him.He was said to have lured the deceased to the back of an Anglican primary school, in the morning and committed the murder there, Daily Trust reports.
Giving his statement at the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID), Yaba, where he is being detained, the suspect said one Osho promised to give him N50,000 if he could provide him with fresh human parts.
“At first, I did not want to succumb to the temptation but it kept coming. When I woke up this morning (Monday), I saw Ibrahim at the back of the house. I told him to escort me to a primary school not too far from the house. The name of the school is Anglican Primary School, Ijanikin.
“He followed me to the place and on arrival there, I stabbed him with a knife from behind. He fell down and I strangled him with a rope. I then cut his stomach open with the knife. I am sorry for what I did,” he said.

Heavy Camera Bkinds little babys eyes.
To all those who love snapping little babies with all kinds of phones with heavy camera flash, please take note before you land yourself in trouble. The baby pictured above was left blind in one eye after a family friend forgot to turn off his camera flash while taking a close-up photograph of the baby boy.
Doctors said the three-month-old baby, who has not been named, has suffered irreparable damage from the flash of the camera, which was held about 10 inches away from the baby boy.
Soon after the pic was taken, the parents noticed that something was wrong with their baby's vision.
According to Daily Mail, following the incident, the baby suffered from reduced vision in his left eye and blindness in his right eye. The damage is said to be permanent and cannot be fixed with surgery.
The flash has damaged cells on the macula, the part of the eye where incoming light rays are focused.
Doctors also say parents should be careful of strong bathroom lights when their babies are taking a bath.
It is not clear whether the family friend will face any legal action following the incident.

For Diverting USAID N40m Drugs 3men are in the police net
The police in Lagos State have
arrested 3 suspected thieves, Emmanuel Onyike, 51; Alabi Daudu, 68; and
Paul Aina, 58 for allegedly diverting a container loaded with
pharmaceutical drugs, valued at N40m, to the Igando area of the state.
It was gathered that the suspects were apprehended by the
operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad attached to Zone 2, on
Saturday, July 18.
According to the police, the container, which belonged to the United
States Agency for International Development, was heading for a warehouse
of the Society for Family Health in Sango Ota, Ogun State.
It was, however, hijacked and diverted by the suspects to a secluded
warehouse in Igando, where the suspects reportedly planned to sell the
contents.
Our correspondent gathered that about 500 cartons of drugs, which the container was conveying, had been recovered by the police.
It was learnt that other members of the syndicate, identified only as
Ikechukwu, Babawale, Shola and Alhaji, were still at large.
Daudu, a native of Abeokuta, Ogun State, said:
“Babawale was a friend, and he was the one who brought the deal. He told me he had some goods, and I should get him a truck to convey them. I knew it was stolen goods, but I did not know they were USAID drugs.
“We drove from the Tin Can Port to an area in Igando. Babawale deceived me that the truck contained household batteries. He did not let the three of us know the warehouse.
“This is the fourth operation I would be participating in. I was arrested by the SARS, Ikeja, on a case of diverting roofing sheets. I got N1.8m from the operation. I got N2m from the second. I cannot remember the third. But now, I am repentant. I have grandchildren.”
Also, Aina from Itapa, Ekiti State, and father of six children, said
Daudu lured him into the act, adding that his own role was to get buyers
for the goods.
He said,
“I knew Daudu when we were selling clothes in Isolo. He told me there was a business he wanted us to do together. I did not have money. It was poverty that forced me to agree to the deal. The plan was to take the products to a buyer. I was asked to provide some of the buyers. I made a mistake. I don’t want to go to jail.”The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 Command, Joseph Mbu, said investigations were ongoing to apprehend others who are still at large.”

kenya Tells Obama "NO" to Same Sex Marriage.
Kenya is an anti-gay country. Below is what President Obama said when asked during a press conference this afternoon in Nairobi what he thinks about gay rights in Kenya.
"The US believes in the principle of treating people equally under the law and that they are deserving of equal protection under the law.and that the state should not discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation and I say that recognizing that there may be people that have different religious or cultural beliefs but the issue is how does the state operate relative to people. You can look at the history of people around the world. When you start treating people differently not because of the harm they are doing to anybody but because they are different, that's the path whereby freedom is beginning to erode.
If somebody is a law abiding citizen who is going about their business and not breaking any law and obeying the traffic signs and doing all the things good citizens are supposed to do and not harming anybody, the idea they are treated differently based on who they love is wrong. Full stop."he said
Below is Kenyan president, Uhuru Kenyatta's response on the issue
"The fact of the matter is Kenya and US share so many values, democracy, entrepreneurship, family values. These are things we share but there are some things we do not share. Our culture our societies don't accept. Its very difficult for us to be able to impose on people that which they themselves do not accept. This is why I repeatedly say that for Kenyans today, the issue of gayrights is really a non issue. We want to focus on other areas that are day to day living for our people. Our health issues as we have discussed with president Obama. These are critical. Issues of inclusivity of women, a key section of society that is normally left out of the mainstream of economic development. What we can do in terms of infrastructure, Education, Roads, Power and Entrepreneurship. Maybe once like you have overcome some of these challenges we can begin to look at new once but the fact remains that this issue is not one that is in the foremost minds of Kenyans and that is the fact"he said
